“Teaching AI: Exploring New Frontiers for Learning,” Dr. Michelle Zimmerman

Renton Prep has a flourishing ambition of applying STEM-based learning in education. Throughout Renton Prep’s history, executive director, Dr. Michelle Zimmerman, has dedicated many years of experience in education. Within her work, she focuses on being able to bring the importance of technology into our classrooms. Significantly, Dr. Michelle Zimmerman actively participates in many educational field trips, events, and conferences along with groups of our students. Now she is adding book author to her repertoire and traits. This keynote highlights her new book, Teaching AI: Exploring New Frontiers for Learning.

Teaching AI

Dr. Michelle Zimmerman is a Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert and her book Teaching AI: Exploring New Frontiers for Learning is finally published! Rather than replacing humanity, the book focuses primarily on how humanity and technology can support us. Teaching AI also emphasizes the diversity in STEM and its work on accessibility. Throughout her many years of travel, Dr. Michelle Zimmerman was able to interact with educators and experts from countries all around the world. These countries include Australia, Japan, South Africa, Greece, Vietnam, and many other locations. Below are some of the components featured in the book:

Michelle Zimmerman’s Vision

Before writing Teaching AI, Michelle obtained motivation and a desire for change. This opportunity arose with the request for a companion book. As a result, she was able to explore and learn about AI from a global perspective.

“Teaching AI is about what makes us uniquely human and how we can emphasize and define emotion, history, culture, tradition, storytelling, creativity, and the ability to make connections across seemingly unrelated or disconnected concepts or ideas,” says Dr. Michelle Zimmerman.

Teaching AI serves as a model to practice for students that are intrigued with learning. Rather than teaching young people to process through memorization and repeated content knowledge, we must train them to interact and explore applications of AI in everyday life. This foundation of knowledge will allow students to know what questions to ask, how to seek solutions, and communicate effectively as they collaborate globally.

Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines or computer systems. Each process includes learning, reasoning, and self-correction. Although the concept of artificial intelligence may seem new and overwhelming to some, in reality, the industry, as well as many of us during our daily lives, apply AI. Moreover, it’s about finding new solutions and communicating those ideas to solve real problems. Possessing a better understanding of AI can help you make informed decisions that will impact the future of your learners. Therefore, in order to bring Artificial Intelligence to its fullest potential, students and educators must take action.

Student Involvement

In addition, Dr. Michelle Zimmerman included both her current and former students in her book. Some of the students she mentions in her book are Jennifer Fernandez, Mia Britt, Myra Tso, Afomeya Hailu, Sharice Lee, Rhonwyn Fleming, Emelyn Sung, Educator Susie Sung, and Camille Mercado. In effect, students at Renton Prep are practicing what will add value to their future careers in ways machines can’t. Innovation, exploration, transfer of learning, computational thinking, creativity, empathy, human emotion, culture, tradition, and ethics will all be crucial to their future careers. Similarly, each of these students have hard-working capabilities in common and are balancing AI with humanity. They all volunteered to contribute their work, projects, and write content that was included in Teaching AI. With the help of Dr. Michelle Zimmerman, she and her students will engage in many professional conferences.

Making a Mark
