Students Present at TechFest Conference 2018

Here at Renton Prep, we always thrive to instill technology based education within our students and educators. On October 26, 2018, eleven of our students were given the opportunity to speak at TechFest in Tulalip, Washington. The conference provides a chance for K-12 school district administrators to see products and services of the latest technology and curriculum. This year, Renton Prep was invited to speak.Students Present at TechFest Conference 2018

TechFest

MicroK12 sponsored the one day TechFest conference. Along with our students, Ms. Abbey Zenk also presented. Together they gave two breakout session presentations that focus on who we are as a school. They discussed our vision, actions, and our plans for transformation. While putting our vision and values firmly in place, we can make changes that continue moving us in the right direction. According to Alvin Toffler, “You’ve got to think about big things while you’re doing small things, so that all the small things go in the right direction.”  This quote sparked the discussion about what actions we plan on taking to get us moving in the right direction and meet our vision.

Taking Action

In addition to setting actions in place, our students completed and designed different projects. They combined their artistic skills with passion and created a story. For one project, 8th-10th grade students went on an extended field trip to Pike Place Market. Their goal was to document themes and collect footage for upcoming projects. Their experience allowed them to speak and express the diversity of the world that we live in. While absorbing the heritage and cultures of the city, students witnessed many vendors on the streets selling their artistic work.  Not only did they create a story, but it was also a great opportunity to learn something new. Discussing history, immigration, economics, and art. Take a look at their great project!

Sharing our Vision

This year’s keynote speaker was Dr. Furness. As well as having done extensive work with virtual reality in the military sphere, he also engaged in classrooms. Ms. Zenk and the students enjoyed hearing about how long virtual reality has been studied and the advances that have been made. Similarly, it was exciting to also think of different ways to build worlds and create experiences for others through a virtual reality sphere. To conclude their presentation, both Ms. Zenk and the students discussed how they and their learning experiences have been transformed at Renton Prep Christian School. Here are some quotes our students had to share about their experiences at TechFest:

“It was a great and unique opportunity to showcase my work and represent our community to a lot of interested people and educators.” Julien Johnson, 10th Grade.

“Presenting at Tech Fest was a very fun experience since I got to talk about what I do to people who want to hear about what we do. So it is a win-win for everyone.” Sharice Lee, 9th Grade.

“This was my first time presenting my work in front of a professional audience and I would like to do it again.” Samuel Liu-Beggs, 8th Grade

“Tech Fest provided me with a new perspective on learning.” Kai Vu, 8th Grade.

“I feel like having the experience of presenting was good. I feel like it is something that is going to really help me.” Max Vu, 8th Grade.
