Throwback Thursday! From 2010 to 2014, our student Throwback Thursday! From 2010 to 2014, our students were part of research in gaming, symbolic logic, data science, research skills, cross-age mentioning, and game design. They engaged in debugging and computational thinking, working with Excel, designing their own research study with a younger buddy and adapting their teaching practice to their findings. They experienced getting feedback from an end user after learning from experts at Valve when they had access to beta test Portal 2 before it was released to the general public. The research began while Michelle Zimmerman was conducting research for her doctorate at UW, College of education, and was selected via blind review to present at American Education Research Association out of over 14,000 proposals, Division C, Section 3b in 2013, then at New York University Polytechnic School of Engineering, Game Center in 2014. You can see where Aerin Malana got her start and the article of her current impact at UW Allan School of Computer Science & Engineering. In the same class, Alan Lai is also at UW and is a TA for computer science as an 18 year old. You can see his story on Renton Prep blogs. Jennifer Fernandez, in the same class has also gone through UW CS with an interest in Quantum Computing and spoke at Macmillan and Scientific American STEM summit two years. Camille, who’s blueprints are in the photos, went on to study informatics at UW in computer science, and along with Jennifer, contributed to the book, Teaching AI: Exploring New Frontiers for Learning. The study was anchored in the question of whether children can identify implicit learning, make it explicit and if that learning can transfer across time. We have the longitudinal evidence now, and the research to show how. Connecting to the story of Noah’s Ark where anim Connecting to the story of Noah’s Ark where animals were in pairs, as even numbers, the class is going to create their own zoo in Minecraft Education edition and decide how many animals their zoo will have, what kind of animals, and if the numbers will be even or odd. They talked about writing equations. While the goal was 20, some students wanted a challenge of 100 animals in their Minecraft zoo and have plans for grouping animals by 10s.
